  3. Nuclear Journal of Canada, 1987 Vol 1 No. 1, by O.K. Myers and M.M. Werner, CNS-, 1987-03-01. Doc type: Paper.
Summary: Health risks associated with the commercial production of electrical energy from various sources have been estimated by various authors. Recent literature on this topic is reviewed. Commercial energy consumption per capita, a measure of a country's level of industrialisation and technological development, has increased several-fold over the past century. This development has been associated with an average increase of about 35 years in life expectancy in Canada and other industrialized countries. The average health benefits which accrue to the population of these countries outweigh the health risks of the required energy production by a very large factor. The statistical probabilities of mortality from various causes are reviewed.

Summary: The 24-hour retention of 99mTc-imidodiphosphate has been measured in 39 subjects. The mean retention for five normal premenopausal women was 49 ± 5%. For postmenopausal women the mean retention was 57 ± 6%. The mean retention for eight patients suffering from Paget's disease was 75 ± 13%. Retention was reduced from 57 ± 8% to 52 ± 7% following estrogen replacement therapy. These results support the contention that 99mTc-imidodiphosphate is retained in vivo to a greater extent than other 99mTc-labelled compound phosphates, and that such retention reflects the rate of whole-body bone mineral turnover.

  7. Nuclear Journal of Canada, 1987 Vol 1 No. 3, by W.T. Hancox, CNS-, 1987-09-01. Doc type: Paper.
Summary: This paper describes the Canadian concept for safe, permanent disposal of nuclear fuel waste deep in plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield. The ability of the disposal concept to isolate the wastes is then discussed in the light of laboratory and field research results. The methodlogy developed to characterize the hydrogeology of a plutonic rock mass is outlined and results obtained from its application to a field site are described. Also highlighted are the Canadian field research areas and the Underground Research Laboratory.

  9. Nuclear Journal of Canada, 1987 Vol 1 No. 4, by J.M. Bewers, CNS-, 1987-12-01. Doc type: Paper.
Summary: This paper outlines the history and regulation of sea dumping of packaged low-level radioactive waste in the ocean. The procedures by which dumping limits are established and periodic safety evaluations conducted under international auspices are described. Particular reference is made to recent negotiations on the future of the practice within the London Dumping Convention and the role played by Canada in this forum, and in others relevant to this subject.
